  • Jonesboro Indiana River Ralley

I'm putting this in the Places to Go spot. Jonesboro Indiana is a tiny rust belt town, NNW of Muncie, and for a decade or more, the local townsfolk block the streets to motorcycles only for a week and the local ABATE has a shindig. I've been many times, but the popularity of this little get-together seems to double in size every year.

I hooked up with a half-dozen present and former workmates (the Jarrett Hogs) and we rolled up. It was a gorgeous day.... except for the heat. It was into the 90's with Mississippi humidity and not a breath of air stirring. Normally this doesn't get me down, but that ol' mortality thing is a bitch. LilJo tells us that Father Time is undefeated. Yup.

Now! This ain't Sturgis. But holy crap! Folks were out!

I got separated from my mates and finally said screw it, and made my way to the bike show. I had one difficult time taking pic's as there were just mobs all around.

The crown jewel, IMO, this pristine knuckle-

Now... don't get me wrong... I love Harley Davidsons. Every model. History... everything. But you put a guy's pride and joy right next to 4,000 examples of everyone elses' pride and joy, and you tend to wander. So here's a smattering of the unusual at Jonesboro. Some being judged, some just sitting around.

      ~~

1980 Honda Goldwing 1100. I talked to this ol' boy. He was splitting with pride; had just got it running the month before. A barn find, he gave $400 for it. Rebuilt the carbs, put new tires on it. $650 invested.

I don't know my Jap engines... this was DOHC. The build looked recent, so maybe a restoration of a '70's chopper, with 80's engine? Anyway, it just screamed centerfold from Ironhorse mag. The frame rear looks like '50's Brit bike? No idea. I love it!

This caught my eye... You see Tri-glides everywhere now. But here's a 1990's Evo powered conversion that was pristine...

This ol' Ironhead Sportster I just love. I would ride this everywhere. If it had a front brake. Gotta love the MX blanket upholstery...

There are some really cool builds out there. High end ones.

But this stuff I don't understand. Saw the dude pull in... or rather heard him. The Who is on record with Guiness for the loudest concert. This Cretin was trying to break it. One of these days, he'll be tapping MY Medicare dollars for hearing aids.

          Awesome pics.

I am not going to swear to it, but I believe the gold chopper is a Honda motor.
I think the plunger frame is an Amen. It looks like their design, but the work where the backbone meets the neck doesn't look familiar to me. But, then again, I am only familiar with looking at their frames built for Harley motors.

In any case, thanks for the pics. Looks like a great time. I may have to sneak over there next year

oh, and yeah, that ironhead is great. Shifter is on the wrong side, but I could live with that

I've seen this bike here before over the years. Several times in fact. Never met the driver, but I love it.

AMF Harley Davidson Shovelhead. Airhorn, Cadillac tail lights. Gorgeous!

Some dude wearing a patch was riding this... it had more flake in it than a bass boat.

A church converted their fellowship hall into a little cafe. A lifesaver for me. My feet were stinging hot. At one point, my phone was warning me it wasn't going to work from the heat.

              I'm a panzy.

We all left separately. Then, looking all over the wrong block for TARA, I happened on this spiffy FXDX. Mine!

The Chapstick had liquified in the bag. Oops.

Would that have made it a '75? Later?

I rode a 1970 a friend of mine had. That was a mind game, for sure! Going for the rear break, only to discover I'd downshifted.

correct, 74 was the last year for the right side shift.
WHen I would frequently bounce back and forth between my 74 sportster and my 98 fatboy, I would seamlessly shift each bike as I should. I never had any issues remembering which one to shift differently. It just wasn't an issue.....until one time, one day. Screaming down the road on my sporty, and a deer ran out into the road.
I grabbed a handful of front brake and threw the bike into 3rd.
4th to third with no clutch at around 70mph is a butt puckering experience

Nice little get together there Dave. Might be a good destination for a HERDSTOCK someday.

That AMF FLH brings back some memories. I sure do think it would be nice to have My old one back.
