  • Changing rear suspension from Progressive to Ohlins

Well after 6 years with the Progressive 440's I'm switching to a set of Ohlins. Should be here tomorrow and on before the weekend. Purchased from Messner's Motorcycle Metal. Howard takes your info ie: weight of rider and passenger, % of solo vs 2 up, inseam and type of riding... and sets the shocks up before shipping them out. He will then assist the installation via phone if you want. Really looking forward to this, will report back...

Make sure you document this with pictures. Instructionals get you a "sticky".

I'd love to lower mine an inch and not lose any travel or ride quality. Let us know how you make out with the new Ohlins.

He numbers them differently than from the Ohlins site. I went with his 3-3

I changed mine out over the winter. I went with these but don't have any report yet. Every time I checked my air shocks they were empty. I think these will be a big improvement but again, I did it for another reason. If I spent over $500 then winter storage was free. So I got new shocks and winter storage (includes all oil changes, etc.) for about $700.

Not sure if I'll get to it this weekend, gotta run to College Park to look at apartments for my son for his final semester. Bummed but that's more important and I don't want to rush the install...I also have new chrome controls that have to be installed.

Looking forward to hearing what you think of them! They get great reviews on most HD websites. How did you like dealing with Howard? He gets mixed reviews on those same sites! LOL

Ok, so I got home from work much earlier than I thought I would so I installed the Ohlins shocks. After reading Howard's instructions several times ( he emails them with your bill of sale) I knew what to expect. Pretty easy once you get the height right by lowering or raising the lift to line up the mounting holes. You need a lift and a helper for measuring the sag while you are sitting on the bike. I also watched a video on YouTube made by Ohlins which was useful.
My understanding is that it takes about 500 miles to really break in so I'll update but I did take a short ride and I think there's a definite improvement. I think I paid $400 and some change for the Progressive and the Ohlins from Motorcycle Metal came to $803 shipped, list is between $900 and $1050 depending on where you look but that doesn't include Howard's magic.
