  • Road King Paint thread

Many of you might remember me telling of my buddy whose RoadKing took a tripple summersault down the highway....

Well, his insurance company has hired me to paint it. The dealership he took it to to fix wanted XXX dollars for the tins from Harley, then $6200.00 to paint them. this isn't even a full paint job, just the to bag caps, front fender, 1 bag, and the tank. to paint them stock birtch white.

I call BS on that. So anyway, I have all his old tins, adn the new ones minus the bag and 2 caps. first off, the tank looked like crap, I would have been embarassed to sell it. so I did some clean-up on it, adn scuffed it and primed it again. and so far also have the side covers scuffed, cleaned, adn primed now.

I will post pics once it is done, of the step by step. Also, he isn't getting a plain white, he is getting silver and metallic blue 2 tone custom paint from me.

thus the reason for scuffing and repriming everything . Harleys primer is black, and mine is gray. if I painted everything like that, the paint wouldn't match.

and one of these days I will start learning to type A-N-D rather than adn.......fingers just don't like doing what my brain tells them to when I am high on paint fumes :)

OK, I have all the parts for Bigun's bike now.
I have to modify the bag caps for the new latches, then shoot primer on the new bag and both caps.

by the end of the day today, I should have the primer shot, and most if not all of the piecs wet sanded and be ready for the first coat of color tomorrow

P.S. Danny, you said you don't want to see anything till they are done.....so quit looking at this thread

I can't wait to see the photos!

BTY - I ALWAYS spell the "TEH" and and "AND"! Can't stop it even if I'm thinking about. I just go back and fix it after I'm finished with whatever I'm typing! I hate it!

ok, before I could start on the paint process for the bag caps, I had to modify them slightly, Bigun has chosen to replace the hockey puck style latch handles with a slim pop-up style from Diablo Custom Baggers.
the mounting hole needed to be bigger so I wanted to do the "cutting" before prepping for paint

this is the stock style latch on the old bag cap

the next 2 pictures you can see the difference in mounting hole size

so , per instructions from DCB, I took the mounting nut and centered it over the original hole

then used a roroty tool with a diamond deburring drum to "carve" the orinial hole just slightly bigger than the traced ring

the new pop-up latch fit, so now I can begin prep work for paint

doesn't the new style look so much nicer than the old hockey puck

after first coat of paint cures, that's when the fun starts....
(to Danny) -->I have to borrow Rockys bike later this week to see exactly how the side covers line up with the bags to make sure I mask everything off uniformly
