  • License plate holder install

Okay...I'm going to try my best to ask the right questions, but I'm completely clueless when it comes to adding/removing anything on my ride.

I have a new custom painted curved laydown plate holder. I was chatting with 41bigdawg and he mentioned jacking my ride up and doing the install myself. I had, several weeks ago, stuck my hand under the fender and believed that I couldn't do it that way. I just checked again and I can reach all the bolts underneath so this appears to be something I should be able to do.

    Here are my questions:

    1. Is installing the license plate holder as easy as it appears (lol)?

    2. What tool is used to unscrew the screws/bolts? The exposed screw head is a philips but they are at a strange angle and I'm not sure how to get a screw driver in there?

    3. Is it simply the removal of the 3 screws, install the new plate holder and screw it back down?

    4. Is loctite needed...I would have to assume so? (Red or Blue?).

Those are all the questions I have at the moment. I would greatly appreciate any suggestions you all may have...even if it's to go to Wally World, walk to aisle 6 and buy a 'clue.' :)

    Thank you.

Weelll You got different screw drivers a short stubby might work or a long skinny one whatever best gets a straight angle to it Even got some set up like a wrench or socket set.. The nuts on interior of the fender are maybe around a 7/16 inch wrench give or take and a long box end one might be best as in a real bind you can snake the nut in on the wrench and not even need to get yur hand in there maybe. If them screw are phillips I'd be tempted to replace them right off with a allen or torx cause they can be got to so much easyer and not wallow out like a POS phillips

yea locktite red would be yur best bet less you plan on takin it off often

I been lookin at a side profile of the bike you claim and find it hard to believe HD would need to take the tire off, be curious to see the BOOK HRS they claim on that job. Versus what they claim they gonna do for you.
Then too the BOOK might say take the tire off but mechanics make money By comin up with faster ways than the BOOK

              Roger that 41bigdawg...:)

Thanks for all the help fellas. I'll post pics once I tackle this HUGE project (Heavy sarcasm ;))

It's almost embarrassing that I can't/won't/might tackle a project like this. I am required on a daily basis to evaluate many different and difficult situations and get the job done....there's not much time for sitting on my hands. I'm kinda excited for this, even though for some of you this isn't any more difficult than breathing. <Sigh>

Don't worry about it check 6, at least you're not asking how to change a lightbulb, which for me would be a major ordeal.

Kinda like cleanin that rifle you got, sometimes you dont have the needed rods cleaners brushes so you go to the store and complete one step at a time, sometimes your out in the field and you gotta improvise, Some time you gotta retrograde and revise your op order..... Same with tools and mechanicals.

This is how you start a relationship w/ your bike. Just be careful or you might get a bug like Ironhead had and next thing you know you have a Bobber you didn't was there.

It took me about an hour to remove and install the new plate holder. The powder coat was $23 and looks very nice. I couldn't be happier...:moo
