  • Interesting speedo problem?

This is actually the first thing out of the ordinary has happened to
my Sporty since I bought it over a year ago.
Past Saturday the 3rd I was out riding. I was about 25 miles from
home when it started raining. Nothing real hard, although I was soaked when I got home, it was nothing like torrential.
Sunday when I went for a ride I looked down and noticed my speedo
was only reading 25 to 30 mph even though I was going 40 or so.
I sped up but the speedo didn't climb very much. I stopped off to have
a Beer and ponder the occurence. I couldn't have a good time knowingI had a problem so I decided to go home. When I left the bar, the speedo
seemed normal again??? Although a little slow to return to 0, which is kind of normal for this bike. I've never had the problem again either.
I just went out and did the codes, as per the manual, and there were
no codes set at all, If I'm understanding the manual correctly. Starting from D01, all the way up to the end all codes showed CLR. None showed SET, This means none were set then doesn't it??

Anyone have any theories or ideas why it acted funky for a while?
The ride where it wasn't registering right was about 4 miles, and then it set for about 40 minutes.

Yep, water on the connections at some point......Most likely the connector to the speedo.....pull it apart, blow it out, and apply some dielectric grease back into the connector. It will keep the water out, and the go juice in.........

Mine acts up to, but usually after a hard washing, and the Damn Fu$$^&**^* idiot light cluster wiring is falling apart on mine...I've had to get some black silicone and attempt a re-construction of the little moisture boots at the base of the light cluster.....by the way, (when) the lights burn out in the cluster, they can be changed, and found at your local auto parts store. The dealer will tell you to replace the whole cluster for about $150.00....

      Dont......PM me with questions Brother.............

Riding in Flood Hamshire last summer, my bike was so wet the speedo never stopped reading, but the trip odometer reset itself a few times.

I have had the same problem with my '99 twice. I have a 15 mile ride to my closest gas station, and after I gas up and start it back up, the problem is gone.
Makes sense if it is a moisture problem 'cause the short ride to the station would dry everything out.

Thanks everyone, I'll pull the connectors apart and make sure they are good and dry and put some dielectric in there.
Probably just check out everything and reapply grease since it's 10 years old. I'm still kind of surprised it didn't throw a
code though?.........I've ridden several hundred miles since then though with nary a problem.
