  • Inspection cover still leaking after primary cover swap

So i put my nice new chrome outer primary cover on, all went fine, filled it up , no leaks, took it for a ride yesterday, came home parked it. Like 3 hours later i noticed a small spot of oil on the floor. Coming from the right most screw that hold the inspection cover on. I reused the paper gasket.
So today i went out and got a brand new gasket , put it on, took it for a ride, parked it and it's still leaking out of that same screw. I tightened them up pretty snug, I don't have a tiny torque wrench, but it's as tight as I could get it with a screw driver.

I think it should be about 10ft lb, I don't have a book so I don't know the exact tq specs. Anyone know? Is there any other reason i would have a leak here other than the gasket or a loose screw?

Tighten till it's snug + 2. Wrap the end of the 2 LONG bolts that go in the cover in Teflon tape, only as wide as the tape, just so it's snug when going into the inspection cover.

Mine "weeps" too Eric. The Teflon trick works, but I get tired of doing it............

Well I found my inch pound tq wrench, So I went out and tightened them to 80 inch pounds, that's only 9 foot pounds, and I didn't have them that tight. So do you have the exact tq spec? I'll try the teflon too.

Also Dave, what's a good indicAtor that the pratt is full of oil? I know how much to put in initially, but what about topping off?

Try using a little green Scotch Brite pad to take some of the gloss of the chrome on both pieces. Then tighten the screws down. This method works for me on chrome pieces.

Well after I torqued it down to 10ftlb it seems to be ok. If I starts. Up again, I'll tape the bolts, and rtv the gasket.

Mine has 2 little black o-rings, one on each shaft on the bolts. Also had a red rubber gasket that I've removed and used over several times.

This is my dyna I'm talking about monk. Sorry should have specified.

It's still got a tiny amount of oil at the screw head. Tomorrow I'll scuff up the chrome, rtv the gasket and Teflon tape the bolts hopefully that stops it. I can't handle oil spots on my garage floor! Lol
