  • How hot do exhaust pipes get?

So this 883 I got has drag pipes on it, no shields, just straight pipes that are chrome plated. Surprisingly there is only about 6" of blueing on the chrome. But i wanna get em powder coated black.

The powder guy says he has high temp metallic powder that's good to 1200 degrees. Is this sufficient? I don't think it would get much hotter than 800 or so. The jobs only gonna cost about $100, so if it don't last i guess, live and learn.

Eric, if you stay on the rich side with the jetting/tuning, the coating will be fine.....But if you go lean....your gonna lose it......g

Pull your plugs and check the color....if they are dark brown - black your rich if they are light brown - white you are running lean.

I doubt it's very lean because thr chrome on the pipes was barley blue at all, more gold and only 6" or so off the head.

You're fine. Chrome will discolor with heat, and because HD pipes are single walled, (unlike Jap pipes which are double) they'll blue every time, no matter what.

                      Powedercoating isn't good enough.

JetHot ceramic coating will work, but only in the 1500* and over colors/coatings. The coating that looks like polished aluminum will turn dull in the forst corner off the head due to heat, and corners are exhaust hot-spots due to the deflection of the super-heated air.

Well too late now. I already have them getting done. Well see what happens, if they discolor oh well.

On my dyna, I got some grill paint on the pipe, right where it comes out of the head, and that hasn't burned off yet and it's only rates to 700*. The powder coat is rated 1250*. If it last 5k miles I'll be happy.
