  • What's a good idle rpm?

    My bike idles at 1300rpm when hot and sitting in neutral. Seems too high to me, Whats a good rpm? And how do you adjust it? I imaging with the idle screw on the carb, but what direction do you turn it, and how far? Do it with the bike running and hot? Or off and cold?

    Id wanna know what yur book says but right now a BT is idlein around ten K Id make sure the enricher valve is workin right first then turn the screw in a quarter turn at a time (that would be clockwise) and wait for it to smooth out, that might not have any effect you might end up rejetting .

          What is BT? what is idling at ten K?

          I'm idleing at 1300, my enricher is fine, and the carb has been jetted so that should be fine, I think I just need to adjust it, I thought you turn the screw counter clockwise, maybe that's why is so high now, it was idling at like 1100 before, and I think I turned it a hair to the right.

            BT= Big twin OK lookin at it if you could from the bottum Clockwise is turning the needle in allowing less fuel, counterclockwise is allowing more fuel ,, like a spigot outside yur house that you got the garden hose hooked to. But you eventually you can go too far in either direction causing excessive rich or excessive lean conditions. I believe the initial setting is 2and a half turns out from absolute closed (and dont screw it tight just till you feel it bump into somethin or you'll smash crap in there)

            10k = 10000

              Yes if you did like you type you most likely increased yur idle speed

                  ok, i thought the idle screw was just to the right of the throttle cables on the top of the carb? thats what i was told. that picture on the link ablove shows it being on the bottom, and you have to drill out a plug to get to it.???

                        well im not pulling off the carb to drill out the plug, so i guess for now ill just leave it. im gonna get a S&S carb over the winter anyway. its not gonna hurt anything idling at 1100-1300 or right?

                            That would be the screw for the idle speed all right,unless someone has drilled the AF{air fuel} mix cap off of that one it will be unadjustable.
                            USUALLY,You should make sure that there is just a slight bit of slack in the throttle cable so`s the cable wo`nt be holding it partially open if it is adjusted too tight then turn that screw counter clockwize{ccw} when looking down on it to get a lower idle speed,I do`nt have a tach. on Mine FXDWG but I am thinking it idles about seven fifty to eight hundred,if Yours has some kinda wild azz camshaft then the idle speed will need to be adjusted up accordingly.
                            If You have a book the adjustments on the carb should be detailed in it,If You do`nt have a book then it might be a verrry good idear to getz one.
