  • 03 Road King problem

Hello all. My riding buddy (who hasn't gotten on here yet) and I were out riding and he's having a few issues with his 03 RK that I thought I'd post up. It's stock for the most part but has SE pipes on it. He's had it since last August. It's Fuel Injected.
What happens is after we ride for a while and we stop at a stop light his bike will "pop" every once in a while. It's been doing this on and off since he got it. Yesterday we were at a stop light and after it "poped" a couple of times it died. When he started it up again it ran at high RPM's for about 20 seconds before it slowed back down. It didn't happen again but that was the first time it died. It was only 70 here yesterday so we agreed this needs to be taken care of before it gets warmer.

Looking for any ideas and comments. I'm thinking the dealer needs to check the EFI to see what's going on there but I may be wrong. Fluids are changed recently, plugs about a year old.

Does the '03 show trouble codes? If so have you checked that?

Don't know about codes. Where / How do I find them? Isn't it on the LCD somewhere?

It is and the factory manual should give you step by step in activating and showing those codes.

It sounds like something which is intermitant which would make me think of the ignition system right off.

the bike is getting old enough, it could develop the lean pop issues due to a bad intake seal...(not uncommon)....test this with a can of starting fluid (with the little spray tube) and spray just a touch of fluid next to the intake gaskets one bank at a time...if the bike increases its RPM's, you have a lean condition brought on by the bad seal....this is a cheap test, and a good place to start....just my .02.....

i would not be surprised to find a DTC in the bikes computer either.....directly related to a lean burn condition....g

Will do. I talked to my buddy and gave him the links to check it out and he'll get to it pretty soon. I read Dave's posts on the "other" forum about getting the codes out but I also read a couple others so is there an easier way to get the codes to display (there was one about switching to "run" and holding in the trip meter and then turning the ignition to "on" but I'm not sure if that will work or not. My buddy has his user manual if it's in there)?

Just talked to my buddy and he ended up bringing in his RK to the dealership. They said there was a vacuum plug missing and that's all it was. That sound right to you guys?

Very well could be as a vacuum leak will cause what you said it was doing.

Thanks. I'll let him know to keep an eye on it as it may / may not be the original problem.

Ted. Think you were right. Same thing happened again so he went back and bitched. After further testing the found the temperature sensor was faulty and replaced it. He got it back yesterday and will take a longer ride tomorrow to see how it runs. Thanks. This sound right?
