  • Primary adjustment

I ride an 05 road king and when I have always had trouble getting it into neutral
When I picked it up from the shop after the crash they told me it may be just a primary adjustment
Has anyone heard of this and if so do you know the process

Yes, but primary adjustment has little to do with finding neutral, as clutch basket adjustment, and clutch cable adjustment are more critical.

Fluid level can effect it as well.

I'd adjust the clutch basket and cable, first. Primary chain adjustment is another part of the "Primary/clutch" service which should be performed at the 10K service interval, or in your case, a problem arrises.

I just got it out of the shop and don't want to go back so soon
They replaced the cable so I'm hopeing they set that corectly
I bought my bike at 10,000 miles and they said they had just completed the service
So since I have had issues from day one I might lean more toward clutch basket.

Agree with DAve, does it shift OK, go into first from neutral good? Cluth pulled in while running, does it wamt to crawl. Check or change the fluids. IMO
I am no mechanic, or don't even to pretend to be one.
Those who say it can't be done should get in the way of those doing it.

Primary only turns the clutch basket, if the primary chain/belt is loose/to tight it wont change how your clutch adjustment is, unless your basket is out of alignment and drags your basket/plates etc. against the drive shaft etc. This would make a-lot of noise and chatter.........YOU WOULD KNOW SOMETHING WAS WRONG!!!

            Know what I mean?

No bad noise or anything I goes into gear just fine
The only problem is going into neutral when sitting still
I never gave it much thought until I picked it up from the shop and they said something about it
Now it sounds like they are just wanting more of my money

Most likely normal......do the go into neut while rolling or adjust the clutch better, half a turn on the clutch cable sometimes will make a world of difference!
