Oh man! Forecast was sunny and 52 today... and in reality it was partly sunny and mid 40's but I got 80 miles in and it felt great! This, from yesterday:

More-than-casual readers of my drivel on this forum might remember last year I was struggling it "it". That was, basically, a slipping of the desire to ride. I've re-read that thread. there was my usual penchant for making a short story verrrrry long, and was filled with mishaps and discomfort, etc. I won't link you to it, hell... takes a half hour to read. But here's a snippet:

But- this "it" is illusive. Riding with unease is my present challenge. Doesn't take Einstein to think of some seat time as a remedy. I want to ride with ease. You can do so with vigilance. I hope to get back to this. Sometimes... recently... I get the feeling that when I'm rolling, I'm not so much riding, as gripping a 675# game controller, looking for, and fearing, the next threat that pops up.

This, from someone who began riding motorcycles fifty one years ago.

Well. Today, leathered up tight, I threw a leg over, and pointed west to 3 towns away, looking for the rare curvy road in these parts, and flew. Passed a couple trucks, saw some nice revs, broke a few posted limits, and had fun, stopping only for pee and coffee.

My only real impression, after a solid four months of not riding, was how powerful and quick this damned bike of Raymand's is. I had no "unease" I'd written about last year. Curious.

I wonder now, having the realization that I had this prostate cancer for over a year and not knowing it, that I was just experiencing a general malaise.

Well, here again, over-thinking stuff. I can say one thing... I had a great ride today.

Each spring, I take a couple two three rides by myself, to get the feel back, reactions back, find all the control levers, pedals, buttons, with ease. I do this before I let Patty climb on, before I take rides with other riders. Spring ritual.

That is wonderful Dave, and, also great that all those feelings of illness have passed away, more like being a free man.
I too, at various times, have had a feeling of unease while riding, other times, at speeds in excess of 120 MPH, I have felt at total comfort and ease.
I think sometimes it is a little voice within us that is saying, be very careful on this drive as there may be something not right with the traffic around us. An extra feeling of caution. That feeling of being cautious might come once in a lifetime, it may happen several or more rides in a row. I only know that when I have ignored that still small voice, some things just did not go the way I would have liked them too.

                    Thanks, guys.

It's funny. My ol' stock Superglide was, as I so often told people, as comfortable as an old shoe. And so effortless to cruise on. I also told people I just rode it around like I drove Mom's old Delta 88 Royale. And pretty true.

TARA? It is very stable, and handles like a panther with the tuned tubes and shocks. But it's weird- with so much HP and torque on hand, I've never felt the compulsion to cruise around. There's a slight harmonic vibration around 2,200 RPM, which is not uncomfortable, it's just there. This bike defies you to cruise. It LOVES 3k to 4k revs, and with the Baker, that's over 80mph.

Last year I felt unease. Yesterday, I felt exhilarated.

THRILLED for you, my friend. This is the best news!!

And I'm willing to bet you at least suspected this, on some level, and that's why your weekend ride was so good. Or maybe it was as simple as blowing out the cobwebs after everything. Regardless, glad for all of it! And I hope this means we'll see you in Wisconsin this summer.

MrMarty, there are four of these beautiful things around Oakhurst Gardens, a commissioned build. This place is part of the Ball Foundation. They've been here for years, right off one of the bike path greenways I always use.

These magnificent benches are a true English Garden Bench, and made out of teak. They weather gray, and last forever. Well, I'd seen these sitting here for years, and they WERE getting a little worse for wear. I was horrified when, three years ago, they pulled them in and painted them. Well, I changed my mind in seeing how well this stuff... some sort of sealant... preserved them.

Years back, Norm Abram of the New Yankee Workshop built one of these. Out of teak. The episode was a two-parter, which was rare. And, rarer still, Norm had a lot of trouble building one!
