make sure you keep your pets pest free. I just found out today that my 11 year old Aussie has heartworms and the vets here all won't treat for that after 9 years of age...the treatment is way too harsh and could kill the pet as easily as the pest.
I've never been without a dog or dogs, except my 3 years in the Navy. My dogs are as important to me as any child is to a parent and I care about them just as much. I put down all my dogs myself because IMO that's the way it should be done...dogs and cats hate the vet's office and it scares them and I can't see any need in putting my 'kid' through any fear and the impersonal nature of having some stranger (to your pet) do it. So...I'm gonna give ol' 'Buddy' another week, plus or minus a day or two and if he's sufferin' any more than he's starting to now, I'll walk him out in a field (if he can make it that far...heartworms is a big cause of not being able to get enough oxygen in their lungs) and let him feel like he's gonna help me scare up a critter or two and then pet him and put him down while I pet him. Every time I have to do this I cry like a little girl (doin' it now actually, thinkin' about it). He won't suffer no more though and he'll know I loved him with all I got. Even if I had the means to be able to've done heartworm *prevention*, I don't think he'd have lived too much longer than 11 anyway. It's a good age for a big-ish dog and he was a happy-go-lucky bastard, never had a bad day in his life...other than when he got fixed, I guess.
Anyway, if you got the means, try to keep your pet(s) up to date with heartworm prevention. Ticks and fleas is just a nuisance compared to what heartworms can make the pet go through.
Okay...sorry for the fuggin' sob story, just thought I'd remind folks and also to get some of my cryin' done early maybe.
