  • Havin' a cookie!

I'm so proud of my son Aaron, who has started a new woodworking business on the side, and in the last two years, has flourished.

His specialty is live edge pieces, and he's also very accomplished on a lathe. And his stuff sells! That's what I so admire about him- he has the skills, and he kicks this stuff out in good time. contrast that with me- I built a library table for our home... and it took me two calendar years!

Anyway, recently, he bought a 3" thick cypress "cookie" out of the base of a trunk from a local source, all dried and ready. He fashioned a table out of it, with purchased hairpin legs. It sold immediately, so he bought two more. Now a local coffee shop saw it on his FB site and wants one.

As he had just changed jobs and it working overtime, I offered to finish the top as I had done on a walnut live edge top last year.

He brought it over last night. Cypress is surprisingly light. I've never done anything with it. As with all cookie sections and live edge planks they split during the drying process, and step 1 is to lock up the splits with butterflies, an ancient trick. Now, live-edge stuff ain't my thing, but the butterflied joints can be quite decorative. I'm going to use a dark walnut for the butterflies.

Here's son Aaron, displaying his original score...

Here's a tabletop I helped him on last year. The fun of this is- it's mostly hand-work. It's "pull up a stool, put on some music, put your brain on hold, and go at it."

This slab was walnut, and the inserts were ovankol.

Here's the cookie. That's a 36" steel rule in the pic. It's 3" thick and pretty flat.

I'll put 7 butterflies in it, all with proportionate sizes. He gave me a nice piece of walnut to make them out of; the color contrast will look nice.
