Only 150,000 units sold last year. The peak sales for the Mercury line was in 1978-1979. I remember the Cougar very well! Ford said they are going to focus more on the Lincoln line of vehicles.

They made their best cars about 40 years ago....
vs....
They definitely didn't go the right direction....
Though it is too bad they didn't make a new "retro" styled Cougar like the other companies are doing..Last edited by Motive; 06-02-2010, 03:09 PM.It's not "derailed", as long as the last post relates to the post above it...it's just on a different rail, heading into a more interesting direction

Yep, low end economy car buyers go Japanese...they should have capitalized on the "Traditional American Muscle" image.
Ford was smart, and went after that early...which I find kind of odd that Mercury didn't....It's not "derailed", as long as the last post relates to the post above it...it's just on a different rail, heading into a more interesting direction

Mercury.....not surprizing.
Oldsmobile is next, as will ikely be Buick, or Pontiac. All those brands are basically the same vehicle anyway. GM moved the Cadillac plant in with Corvette, and had it not been for the performance side of that, they'd be in the crapper too.
I still remember when all those cars were separate vehicles, with their own engines and transmissions, and not just one car with 4 different kinds of taillights and headlights, with different badges glued to them...........**Note: The technical info I provide is suggestive. I am not a perfeshunel.

I can't remember an Oldsmobile worth a damn, since the 70's...supposedly the Calais was decent
Is Buick still around? Last decent car I remember them making was the Grand National

Long hair, loud assed oxidized Camaro....yeah, I'd probably kick my own ass out of the complex nowadays...
If they woulda looked under it, they woulda seen that the driver side had no floorboard...It's not "derailed", as long as the last post relates to the post above it...it's just on a different rail, heading into a more interesting direction

Pontiac is already supposedly gone, which suprises me with as many grand ams you see on the road. Olds has been gone for a few years now. Buick is still alive and kicking.
Mercury kinda suprises me, the milan (mercury Fusion) wasa decent seller from the get go, and the Grand Marquis seems to have a very loyal following.
And I heard the other day that Ford is discontinuing the Crown VIc. Not extremely suprising but I figured it would be a Fleet only car, many police and taxi companies buy tons of them. But Ford is coming back with the Interceptor for police use, for years the police version of the Crown Vic was called the interceptor anyway.
