  • Greetings from Uncle Festus (aka Clark)

Hi guys and gals! I finally feel good enough to write a short update and offer some advice. The advice ó stay away from Afghanistan at all costs! Haha. I spent too much time there and somehow got infected with internal gangrene. The last month has been an awful ride. I was in Kabul when I got sick. After a week of being treated for an enlarged prostate, it was apparent that something else was going on. I could hardly walk but went back to the doctor. They immediately sent me to Bagram within the hour by helicopter. Within an hour of arriving at Bagram, I was in surgery to begin cleaning out the infection which attacked me in the worst area. Itís in the groin/ rectal area. The lady surgeon told me if I had diabetes, then I would probably die. I came out of that surgery after 4 hours so apparently I donít have diabetes. That was a Wednesday May 22. Another surgery on Thursday and Friday. Then I was sent to Landstuhl, Germany where the injured soldiers go for treatment. I was there from Friday May 25 to the next Friday June 1 when I was sent to Walter Reed in Bethesda, MD for further treatment. I had 5 surgeries in Germany and 2 or 3 in Walter Reed. I lost count. As of now, I have a temporary colostomy to aid healing. The doctors closed up up 7-8 inches of my wound during that last surgery. I still have a large open wound that will take some time to heal and close. Possible need for skin grafts/plastic surgery later but that isnít known for sure yet. It could heal on its own which Iím hoping happens. Iíll be at Walter Reed for another 10-14 days. Then Iíll go home to Louisiana to complete my healing. I hope to get rid of the temp colostomy in 3 months. I appreciate any and all prayers sent on my behalf. I know that God is taking control through all of this. I am thankful to be alive. I feel good and am taking this one day at a time. I hope to be good as new by Thanksgiving or even sooner. Stay safe and heed my advice!

Hey Clark, we've all been thinking of you and it's great to see you posting. Welcome home. We'll keep the prayers going for healing, and will also take your advice and stay far, far away from all those places ending in "stan".

Wow! Glad you are feeling up to posting! Keep the updates coming.

Cindy Lee has been keeping us abreast of what was going on. As to the advice? She advised me not to Google what you had... that was a mistake on my part. Yikes. As to your sage advice on not going to Afghanistan? I shall heed it!

I don't even like afghan blankets any more!

                    Heal up, brother!
